You already know
something is wrong.
You just can't name it. You've got a guess, and you've had the same guess for about two years now. We asked 1,047 owners the same question you'd answer, and then we measured whether their guess was right.
01 · In their words
One of these is probably yours.
Before any scoring, we asked every owner one open question. If you could fix one thing, what would it be. 813 wrote an answer. Here are six of them, as typed.
We do not have a huge group but can't figure out how to hire people that actually want to work and be accountable end to end for their work. Everything pings back to me.
I have one person wearing multiple hats and holds all the keys. Need that work broken out.
Build a management system that gives me clear visibility into profitability, performance and accountability without depending on me to personally oversee everything.
I've got all the metrics, SOPs and processes written and live dashboards to track. Missing a strong smart integrator to help execute.
I would like to have 6 to 12 months of costs in the bank instead of operating from month to month.
Communication within the company and between the departments. A better way to track the numbers.
Read the first four again. They are the same problem. One man cannot let go of the work, and every one of them describes it differently. Two of those four did not even pick People when we asked. That is the whole difficulty. You can feel the thing clearly and still call it the wrong name.
02 · What owners name
Nearly half say the problem is people.
Asked to pick one of five areas, 957 owners chose. People took 46.1 percent, more than marketing and finance combined.
957 companies, each picking one area.
03 · What the scoring shows
And this time, they were right.
Owners usually name what's loudest, not what's worst. So we ignored the answer and scored all five areas separately. People came out lowest, at 32.9 out of 100. The area owners name most is also the area that measures worst.
That is not the normal result. Most of the time the loud thing and the broken thing are different things, which is why guessing costs people years.
Average score in each area, out of 100. 957 companies.
04 · Find your row
It changes as you grow.
Find your revenue in the first column. Read across. The number in orange is what owners your size name most often. Before you look, say your guess out loud.
| Revenue | n | People | Marketing | Finance | Performance | Operations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $250K | 242 | 56% | 22% | 12% | 8% | 1% |
| $250K–$1M | 167 | 43% | 28% | 13% | 13% | 4% |
| $1M–$5M | 190 | 31% | 41% | 16% | 5% | 7% |
| $5M–$20M | 74 | 24% | 31% | 20% | 9% | 15% |
| $20M–$100M | 17 | 35% | 29% | 12% | 12% | 12% |
| $100M+ | 11 | 55% | 36% | 0% | 0% | 9% |
Under $250K it's people, and it's you.
56 percent say people. At that size there's nobody to hand anything to, so every problem wears a face, and usually it's yours.
Between $1M and $5M it flips to marketing.
41 percent, and the only band where people isn't first. The thing works. Now you need more of the market to find out.
Operations doesn't exist until suddenly it does.
1 percent under $250K. 15 percent between $5M and $20M. Nobody has an operations problem until there's enough operation to have a problem with.
701 companies on the current revenue scale. The top two rows hold only 17 and 11 companies, so treat those two as a hint, not a finding.
05 · What the guess costs
Do the math yourself.
Pick your best month this year. Now your worst. Look at the gap between them.
Now tell me what caused it. Not a theory. The actual reason, the one you'd stake money on. Most owners can't, and that's not a failing. You're inside it.
Whatever that gap is, it repeats. It repeated last year. The cost of not naming the thing isn't the month you lost. It's that you'll spend the next twelve months fixing whatever you guessed, and the gap will still be there in December.
We watched 1,047 owners guess. Then we measured. This is what the measuring is for.
06 · What actually happens
How we find it.
You answer twenty questions. Five sectors, about ten minutes, no cost. You get your own scores and the one constraint the answers point at.
Then, if you want the real number, your team answers the same questions. Separately. Anonymously. No names ever come back to you, and that's written into the agreement, not just promised on a page.
The finding is the distance between the two accounts. What you believe versus what the people doing the work know. That gap is the thing, and it is the one measurement you genuinely cannot take yourself.
Who this is not for. If you want a second opinion that agrees with your first one, don't do it. The whole method is built to tell you something you didn't want to hear. Plenty of owners would rather not know, and that's a real choice, just not one we can help with.
So which one is yours?
Twenty questions. About ten minutes. It's free, and at the end you'll have a name for the thing you've been describing wrong for two years.
Method, and what this is not
How to read this.
What this is. 1,047 owners took the same assessment. 957 of them picked their main constraint and got a score in all five areas. 701 told us their revenue. 813 wrote out what they would fix if they could fix one thing.
What it isn't. This isn't a random sample of American businesses. Everyone here chose to take a test about what is holding their company back, so they already believed something was. That's a real bias and you should read the numbers knowing it.
About the quotes. Real answers, typed by real owners. We show a first name and last initial, the kind of business and the revenue. Company names are not published. We fixed spelling and changed nothing else.
About the revenue table. An older version of the assessment had one "under $1M" option instead of two. 256 people answered that way. We left them out of the revenue table, because there is no honest way to split them between "under $250K" and "$250K to $1M." They are in every other number on this page.
Using these numbers. Quote them anywhere you want. Credit the Platform One Index 2026. If you want one slice, a single revenue band or a single sector, email us and we will send it.
